Parenting during Adolescence

                 Parenting during Adolescence

No other thing can bring joy or pride to parents than having a child. And the most beautiful memories we make in our life are seeing our child growing through. There are many stages of child development such as infancy, toddler, childhood, teenage and finally adulthood.
The period of transition from the childhood to an adulthood (including teenage), i.e the age between 11-18 years is known as adolescence age. Children go through physical, sexual and emotional changes during this stage which is quite stressful for them. This can be the most challenging phase of life for both parents and children as sometimes parents wonder how all of a sudden their child  becomes hostile and argumentative in behaviour.

Some parents wish their kids should do the same way they did in their adolescent age but now-a-days kids no longer accept this questioning style parenting. There can be wide differences on clothing style, leisure time, new interests etc. There are many reasons behind this transformation and parents should understand from their point of view because:

  • Children experience rapid changes in their body in terms of height and weight because of puberty. They may feel little awkward about their appearance. Don't ever embarrass your teen in front of others for their physical appearance.
  • Change in physical appearances can lead to several other nutritional disorders as teens tend to go for dieting.
  • Bullying is yet another issue which means that when a person tries to dominate the other person with respect to his appearance,  colour, financial condition and academic differences etc. It can happen with anyone. But in case of teens, it can be more stressful. If the problem is not solved, it may lead to academic concerns as the teen may refrain from going to school or playing with other children.

  • Children become sexually aware during adolescence age as now-a-days they have an easy access to internet. They learn a lot but always keep an eye on them otherwise they may be a victim of cyber crime.

  • Teens like to get distracted by their peers in this age. They are rather more influenced by their peers and because of this thing, sometimes in negative peer pressure they may land up in trouble under the use of drugs and alcohol.
  • So, to avoid this, parents should give freedom to their children but at the same time, they should be informed or aware about their children, i.e what kind of people are friendly with them.
  • Always remind your children that you're always with them in the need of hour.
Parents should keep the communication open so as to make sure they do not indulge in wrong activities. Also, sensitive and accurate information should be imparted to them in their schools with proper guidance so as to ensure they enjoy their adolescent ride carefully.

A child's birth is the best gift in our life. Those are the happiest moments to cherish. The full one year is challenging specially the sixth month introduction of solid foods to the baby.
